Web design

What to look for in a web designer.

Finding the right web designer will make all the difference when it comes to building a new website for your business and forming a lasting professional relationship.

In my experience, small businesses suffer when a web designer wraps up a project and then they part ways. This can happen because the two sides may have different ideas about how to go forward with a complete design, or the designer may not be well informed on how to handle the next steps for their work.

It is for this reason that all my clients take advantage of my web hosting, updates and maintenance plan.

How to find a web designer you'll love working with

On Your Side

When you first make contact does the web designer take the time needed to learn about both the history of your business and your business' future goals? Ask about their previous work: are they still in regular contact with previous clients? Do clients from previous web design projects keep coming back?

Relevant Skills

The term 'web designer' is very broad. As a small business, you're looking for someone who will take care of the whole process from concept to content generation to templating and launching your website. This incorporates a range of skills:

  • Web Development - including knowledge of HTML, CSS and Javascript.
  • SEO - Search Engine Optimisation begins with the behind the scenes structure of your website.
  • Designer - Visitor trust is built on professional and good looking web design.
  • Hosting tech - To launch your website your web designer must know their DNS from their SMTP.
  • Marketing - A good web designer knows that an attractive web page is not enough. There has to be a strategy that results in visitors making more clicks; whether those clicks are signing up to your newsletter, making a purchase or completing a contact form.

A web designer that goes the extra mile

What's one of the biggest fears for any web designer? Project scope creep. This occurs when good channels of communication between a web designer and their clients aren't established from the start and it takes effect when a project begins to drag and there isn't a clear and detailed contract in place.

I always ensure to take the time with each client before any proposals or contracts are exchanged to understand exactly what they are hoping to achieve with their new website and how I can enable this through the web design process and beyond. This gets us both on the same page from day one and makes sure there aren't any scary surprises later on. Based on our conversations I produce a detailed proposal and contract for every client. This is as much about setting expectations as protecting myself. Be wary of a web designer who doesn't produce a professional and detailed contract. It can be a sign of inexperience and a warning of hiccups later on.
