What will your website cost?

A price makes more sense when you know who’s doing the writing and what happens after launch. Here’s what I charge, what’s included and how to compare it with another quote.

How much does a small business website cost in the UK?

No single price is useful for every small-business website. Building a site around copy you supply is different work from researching your customers and writing every page.

For a new website with me, Rebuild costs £2,495, plus mandatory Care at £99/month after launch. That covers research, the page plan and all the website copy, as well as the design and build. I’m based on the Isle of Wight and work with businesses across the UK.

If you already have a WordPress site you like, Rescue costs £99/month for 12 months. It keeps the design and page addresses and moves the site somewhere simpler. A new design and new copy are a different job.

The website options

Rescue: £99/month for 12 months

Rescue is for an existing WordPress website whose design still works for the business. I move it off WordPress, keep the design and page addresses, then look after it.

The initial commitment is £1,188 in total. Hosting and up to an hour of changes each month are included. No separate Care fee on top.

Rebuild: £2,495, plus £99/month Care

Rebuild starts with the business and what its customers need to know. I research their questions, plan the pages and write the content. You review the work before anything goes live.

The £2,495 is paid in stages:

Stage What the payment covers Amount
Research and planning A plan for the pages and their messages £495
Content and design Website copy and the homepage design £1,000
Build and launch Building the agreed website and launching it £1,000

Mandatory Care starts after launch at £99/month. It includes hosting and up to an hour of changes each month.

Grow: £2,995, plus £99/month Care

Grow is Rebuild followed by three months of new content. Each month we have a 45-minute conversation about your work and the questions your customers ask, and I turn what you tell me into website content.

Further three-month blocks cost £500. Care stays at £99/month after launch, separate from the content work. Read about the writing and research.

There’s no VAT to add to any of these prices.

Budget for the website and its upkeep

The build price on its own leaves out part of the cost. As an illustration, Rebuild plus twelve months of Care comes to £3,683: £2,495 + (12 × £99).

Grow plus twelve months of Care comes to £4,183: £2,995 + (12 × £99). That includes Grow’s first three months of content, but not any further content blocks.

I’ve used twelve months of Care in both examples so the sums compare like for like. They don’t imply a minimum Care term, and they don’t count the time before launch. Rescue is different. It has a confirmed 12-month initial term.

Why website quotes differ

Ask who is responsible for the work behind the pages. A lower quote may expect you to supply finished copy or sort out hosting yourself. That can suit you perfectly well. Just know what you’re taking on.

The useful questions are specific:

  • Will someone research what customers look for and help decide which pages we need?
  • Who writes the content, and when do I review it?
  • What functionality is included in the agreed scope?
  • What will I pay after launch, and what changes does that cover?

Page count alone is a blunt comparison. One page explaining a complicated service can take more thought than several short pages of supplied information.

Get the practical details agreed

Before you choose a provider, ask who owns your domain and content and who has access to them. Check the minimum term, how cancellation works and what happens if you move to someone else. Get those answers in writing.

If you’re weighing up payment models, the monthly versus upfront website guide includes a comparison worksheet.

With me, we talk before anything is agreed. Tell me about the business and your existing site, including any particular features you need. And before work starts, we agree the service, scope, timing and payments.
