How long does the Isle of Wight ferry take?

Depending on your route and operator, the Isle of Wight ferry takes between about 10 minutes and 1 hour, with the fastest crossing on the Southsea–Ryde hovercraft and the longest on the Southampton–East Cowes car ferry. • Southsea to Ryde (Hovertravel hovercraft), foot passengers only, takes about 10 minutes, the quickest way to the Isle of Wight and the world’s only year-round passenger hovercraft service.
• Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head (Wightlink FastCat), foot passengers only, takes around 22 minutes.
• Portsmouth to Fishbourne (Wightlink car and passenger ferry), takes about 45 minutes, ideal for vehicles and access to Ryde, Seaview and the eastern side of the island.
• Lymington to Yarmouth (Wightlink car and passenger ferry), usually timetabled at around 30–40 minutes, and is the quickest vehicle ferry route, serving West Wight.
• Southampton to East Cowes (Red Funnel car and passenger ferry), takes about 55–60 minutes, with frequent sailings and space for over 200 cars.
• Southampton to West Cowes (Red Funnel Red Jet high-speed service), foot passengers only, takes roughly 28–30 minutes.

Wightlink ferry times

Wightlink operates three key routes to the Isle of Wight:

• Portsmouth – Fishbourne

  • Typical crossing: around 45 minutes.
  • Good for: vehicles and easy access to Ryde, Newport and the eastern and central parts of the island.

• Lymington – Yarmouth

  • Typical crossing: around 30–40 minutes, often sold as the quickest car ferry crossing.
  • Good for: visiting West Wight, including Yarmouth, Freshwater and Alum Bay.

• Portsmouth Harbour – Ryde Pier Head (FastCat)

  • Typical crossing: about 22 minutes.
  • Good for: foot passengers connecting directly with mainland rail and coach services at Portsmouth Harbour and Island Line trains at Ryde.

Red Funnel ferry times

Red Funnel links Southampton with Cowes:

• Southampton – East Cowes (vehicle ferry)

  • Typical crossing: around 55–60 minutes.
  • Good for: cars, vans and freight, with hourly departures in peak periods and easy onward travel to Newport and central Isle of Wight.

• Southampton – West Cowes (Red Jet foot passenger service)

  • Typical crossing: about 28–30 minutes.
  • Good for: commuters and visitors heading into Cowes or connecting with buses across the island.

Hovertravel hovercraft times

If speed matters most, Hovertravel’s Southsea – Ryde hovercraft is usually the fastest way across the Solent:

• Typical crossing: around 10 minutes port to port.
• Foot passengers only, with dedicated bus connections on the mainland and direct rail and bus links at Ryde Esplanade.

This makes the hovercraft a popular choice for day trips, commuting and last-minute crossings when you want to be on the Isle of Wight in minutes rather than nearly an hour.

When planning Isle of Wight ferry times, think about:

• Where you are starting from: Southampton, Portsmouth, Lymington or Southsea.
• Whether you need to take a car: choose Wightlink or Red Funnel vehicle ferries if you are driving, or the FastCat, Red Jet or hovercraft if you are on foot.
• How quickly you want to arrive: the hovercraft is quickest, followed by the FastCat and Red Jet, then the car ferries which take up to about 1 hour.
